United State Marine visits Mount Vernon High School physical education classes
United States Marine Sergeant Carl Turner visited Mount Vernon High School and met with physical education classes on Thursday, November 2, 2023. He spoke of careers with the Marines and briefly explained the other armed forces.
Sergeant Turner presented a PowerPoint about fitness plans, food plans, career experiences, expectations and how a day can be in the Marines. The presentation was student friendly and captivating to the MVHS students, who were highly motivated by what Sergeant Turner had to say. He then conducted a challenging Marine fitness test for several students. He also answered any questions the students had.
"It was a wonderful day, and our students learned of more career options,” said Meredith Jaffess, physical education teacher at MVHS, “Our students deserved this.”
Students flocked to the community center at Mount Vernon High School for the second job fair hosted by the Westchester-Putnam Career Center and Rye Playland on Wednesday, February 14, 2024. Students applied and interviewed for various jobs such as ride operator and concession stand attendant.
Students at Mount Vernon High School are participating in a work-based learning activity to learn how to file other people's and their own taxes. Students met for Voluntary Income Tax Assistance training on Thursday, February 8, 2024.
Students at Mount Vernon High School gathered in the auditorium for a masterclass on how to utilize self-care to help promote overall wellness on Thursday, February 9, 2024. Audience members were welcomed with healthy snack options, such as fruit and water before the presentation.
Professionals working in a wide variety of industries visited Mount Vernon High School for Career Day on Friday, February 2, 2024. Student-ambassadors from the National Honor Society and the Her Honor Mentoring program led the professionals around the school and connected them with the students.
Sade Loague, a senior at Mount Vernon High School, is stirring things up in the kitchen through the Career Technical Education program. She is in her third year in Culinary Arts, which is one of the programs offered through CTE at the high school. Sade has worked in a kitchen and gained valuable hands-on experience catering school events.
Hospital beds and medical equipment lined the small gym at Mount Vernon High School for the blood drive hosted by the SkillsUSA Club. SkillsUSA is a student-led organization representing career and technical education students and teachers across the country. The blood drive, open to the community, was held on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.
Eighth grade students and their families gathered with excitement at Mount Vernon High School for the first Career and Technical Education Department Showcase on Thursday, January 11, 2024. Scholars and parents were able to learn more about program opportunities offered in CTE and have their questions answered during the showcase.
