'Twas the makeover before Christmas! Presented by CTE

'Twas the makeover before Christmas! Presented by CTE

Senior citizens walked out of Mount Vernon High School Thursday morning with smiling faces and freshly done hairdos, as Career and Technical Education (CTE) Barbering and Cosmetology 2 & 3 students gave them fresh looks.  View photos from the day here!

This event – in partnership with the Mount Vernon Recreation Department – not only allowed students to work on their craft, but also gave them the opportunity to engage with members of the community to create deeper connections.

Students applied their customer service skills during the event, walking clients to their chair as they asked questions about their hair to provide a variety of services, including dyes and cuts.

“The CTE Department could not be more thrilled to provide such an amazing opportunity for CTE students to engage directly with our treasured community elders, gain valuable work experience and build deep-lasting bonds,” CTE Director Brian Simmons wrote. “Social ties are at the heart of CTE - and this event is one of the most touching of the year.  We are grateful to partner with the Mount Vernon Recreation Department!”

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Demario Strickland, stopped by, mesmerized by the student’s dedication and efforts.

Barbering teacher Ricardo Boreland even bought his students who participated breakfast, as a way to show his appreciation toward them before the holidays.

Hospitality Management program approved by NYSED as graduation pathway for five years

In just its second year as a Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway, the Hospitality Management program at Mount Vernon High School was approved as a graduation pathway by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). The approval, effective for the 2026-2027 school year and lasting five years, allows students to receive technical endorsements for the hospitality industry after completing the program and taking the state-approved exams.
