Nine-credit articulation agreement made between the College of Westchester and CTE Cybersecurity program

Students in Cisco Systems/Cybersecurity, a Career and Technical Education program at MVHS, have a new opportunity available to them thanks to an articulation agreement signed with the College of Westchester. They can now earn up to 9 credits at the college upon completion of the course. The articulation agreement was signed earlier this month. 

“This articulation agreement with College of Westchester strengthens our rich new CTE program by offering students valuable college credit,” said Director of CTE Brian Simmons. “It gives our CTE Cybersecurity students even greater motivation as they prepare to enter an exciting, fast-growing field filled with exceptional career and financial opportunities.” 

Three courses are available to students in the Cybersecurity pathway: IT Essentials, Network Routing and Switching, and Cybersecurity. At the end of the program, students can take the CompTIA A+ certification, validating essential IT support and security skills.

“These three courses drive them to the cybersecurity program at the College of Westchester,” said instructor Juliano DeSouza. “So, when they enter into any college, they can understand the basic concepts. The kids are doing very well.”

One student, 12th grader Xavier Dalton, says that the course has reignited his desire to pursue a career in IT. 

“The course is interesting, but there is a lot more work I'm going to have to do for this class if I want to go to a college for cybersecurity,” said Xavier during his IT Essentials course. “When I was a kid, I wanted to be in IT. Now, since it changed, I’m building back up to being in IT and working in cybersecurity.”

Xavier plans to study cybersecurity and IT in college and appreciates the opportunity to learn how to protect himself, his friends, and family from being hacked. He also is excited for the opportunity to use these skills to help people in his future career. 

As the year continues, students know they now have the opportunity to get a head start on their path towards an IT career with the College of Westchester. The Cybersecurity program also has an articulation agreement with Westchester Community College. Click here to read more about the program.

MVHS Careers in Health and Nursing Assistant students learn from healthcare workers in panel discussion

Mount Vernon High School students heard directly from healthcare professionals during a panel discussion hosted Thursday. Jason Chapin, director of workforce development at the Westchester County Association, moderated the discussion, which featured professionals from various branches of the medical field. The panelists emphasized the breadth of different career opportunities in and around medicine.

MVHS entrepreneurship students meet with business owner to discuss capstone project

Last Thursday, Ashley Bady from Ashley’s Sweet Treats visited Bernadette Romanelli’s Entrepreneurship 2 class, with Kimberly Morales from the Guidance Center of Westchester also in attendance, to discuss upcoming capstone projects. Entrepreneurship 2 is a new class added to the curriculum for the MVHS Entrepreneurship program, which is a part of Career and Technical Education.

Mount Vernon High School grads earn Certified Nursing Assistant credentials

After two years of intensive classroom instruction, clinical training and countless hours practicing patient-care skills, a group of Mount Vernon High School graduates can now proudly call themselves Certified Nursing Assistants. The recent grads have passed the rigorous Prometric Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Exam, earning New York State certification and receiving their coveted pins following the completion of the school's two-year Career and Technical Education nursing assistant program.

MVHS Class of 2026 celebrates success and new beginnings at 148th Commencement Ceremony

Under the evening sky and a brisk breeze at the Stadium at Memorial Field, Mount Vernon High School celebrated its 148th commencement ceremony on Thursday as 196 graduates marked the end of one journey and the beginning of another. The graduates made their way to the field for a ceremonial walk in front of the reviewing stand, where district leaders, school officials and guests looked on. Check out photos from the day here!

Mount Vernon High School Class of 2026 recognized at Senior Awards Convocation

The Class of 2026 at Mount Vernon High School were recognized for their accomplishments throughout their high school careers at the Senior Awards Convocation last Tuesday evening. Students were celebrated for their achievements in front of a crowd of family and friends and received scholarships, new computers, and dorm supplies thanks to local sponsors and donations. The MVHS Class of 2026 will graduate at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, at Memorial Field. Congratulations graduates!
