On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, students at Mount Vernon High School were given a taste of Latin culture through song, dance and cuisine. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, MVHS held several educational lessons to teach students of all backgrounds about the different, rich Hispanic cultures.

In conjunction with students dressing up for 90’s Day and Rep Your Flag Day during Spirit Week, a group of MVHS staff organized a celebration during the lunch period for students to partake in. Over the past few weeks, Physical Education Teacher Elizabeth Torres has been teaching students merengue, salsa and bachata. During lunch, students got to put their skills to the test accompanied by live music. Culinary students at the high school made homemade chips and salsa for their classmates to enjoy. Music Teacher Carmen Nemeth also presented various Latin music to the children. The entire crowd was filled with laughter and excitement watching students dance as they celebrated.

“Today, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we have a wonderful variety of opportunities for students and teachers to showcase what they are working on,” said Assistant Principal Kelvin Roopchand. “This is great for students of an ENL or Hispanic background because they’re feeling included, now they are coming in and dancing and teaching other students how to dance. They’re showcasing their flair and a part of who they are. “
